Oregon Visit & The Mill Casino

I just returned from a very quick trip up to Oregon, checking in on our 2009’s, visiting with some winemakers talking about the 2010 vintage blending and the funkiness of the 2011 vintage along with a stop over to The Mill Casino & Hotel in North Bend (Coos Bay).

A good friend in the industry from years past, Kevin Thompson, is their new Director of Food & Beverage and he is making some sweeping changes at the property.  Kevin has only been there for less than two months, but he’s already begun a shift to local sourcing of the bounty of products at the hotel’s doorstep and changing the overall attitude of food and beverage at the property.  Literally out on the Bay they sit on are oyster spikes with at least three different species, such a unique opportunity for the property to enjoy.  They are also starting to embrace more of the local Dungeness, along with Tuna, Salmon, Ling Cod and Sturgeon.  I can’t wait to head back for a visit!

We were also there during the property’s annual Mill-Luck Salmon Celebration, which is linked to traditional observances marking the return of the salmon and began 8 years ago as a means of sharing the heritage, culture and traditions of the Coquille Indian Tribe and other Pacific Northwest Tribes.  The celebration featured performances by Native American storytellers, drummers, flutists and dancers, a marketplace offering traditional wares and foods, a bay-front canoe exhibit and races, traditional games and activities for children, plus a variety of cultural demonstrations and educational exhibits.  The food was delicious, the embrace of the Coquille culture (and Pacific Northwest Tribes) absolutely fantastic and it was a gorgeous day on the Oregon Coast to enjoy all.

Most exciting is that The Mill has become the first venue in Oregon to carry Labor Wines 2009 Pinot Noir, our first vintage!  The wine is going on the list this week and we are already starting to plan an upcoming wine event for later in the year or early 2012.  Stay tuned overall, I promise to get you all updates soon.

Sommelier Showdown Recap

Wow, what a fantastic event and such a great time!  Sunday night’s Sommelier Showdown at Cowboy Ciao was an absolute blast – well attended, killer food and awesome wines.  Going head to head with owner, Peter Kasperski on wine selections was a pretty daunting task, but really cool as it allowed me to expand on my normal flavor palate and pick some very interesting wines.

I’ve listed my selections below (in Italics), along with the menu for you all to take a look at:

Sommelier Showdown

COLA approved!

Well, we cleared another hurdle yesterday, as the TTB (Federal government) approved the label for Labor Wines and we received our COLA approval. This is a HUGE accomplishment for us at Labor and another of the many items we need to accomplish before we can legally sell our 1st vintage.

We’re still waiting on some further details from the TTB and the State of Oregon, but I’m feeling very confident that the process is working itself out. Stay tuned for our upcoming progress including our website launch, Facebook page and Twitter feed.
